David is one of the first players recruited out of the academy and has come back to coach, instruct, and manage the day-to-day operations of the facility. David has had five years of High School Coaching experience. At Dubuque Senior High School, David was a (4) year varsity starter with accolades. During his college playing tenure, David was a (4) year collegiate starter with accolades, as well. Also, David is dad to Oliver (future MLB pro)!

Austin Clemens

Hometown: Dubuque, Iowa
College: Clarke University, Dubuque, Iowa

Austin is in his second season as a coach at DRBA. He is a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School (2014) where he was a four sport athlete, including 4 years of baseball at the varsity level and received All-State Utility Honors. The former Dubuque County legion player played at Kirkwood Community College for 2 years and finished with a 19-1 pitching record. Austin went on to sign a D1 offer to play at Eastern Illinois. Austin returned to Dubuque to play at Clarke University and graduated from there.

Tucker Mai

Tucker was a four-sport athlete in his prep career at Dubuque Senior High School, while also playing for the highly-touted Dubuque County Legion team.
He is currently a member of the Clarke University baseball team, where he plays first base and pitches for the Pride.
During a shortened 2020 season, Mai started all 22 of the Pride’s games, in which he posted a .333 batting average and a .517 slugging percentage, with six doubles and 19 RBIs.

Tyler Ernzen

Tyler is a 2010 Western Dubuque Graduate. While there, he was a four sport athlete in basketball, football, baseball and track. During his time at WD, the baseball team was ranked third in the state and he was apart of the state track distance medley. After high school, he attended UW-Platteville. Tyler has coached strength and conditioning for 2 years, semi-pro baseball for 10 years and youth baseball for 4 years. Most recently, he helped coach our DRBA 10U Fall of 2020 team to an undefeated season.

Addison McGovern-Smothers

Hometown: Dubuque, Iowa
College: UW- Plattville
Addison is in his third year as a coach at DRBA. He has coached 10u and 11u baseball. He is a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School (2016) where he was a pitcher for four years. Addison is currently attending college at UW-Platteville where he is majoring in forensic investigation.

Noah Herber

Hometown: Dubuque, Iowa
Noah is in his first season as a coach at DRBA. He is a graduate of Hempstead High School (2014) He played nine years of baseball. In his nine years he played pitcher, shortstop, and left field. Most recently, he helped coach our DRBA 10U baseball team alongside head coach Tyler Erzen.

Curran Smothers

Hometown: Dubuque, Iowa
College: Luther College & The University of Dubuque
Curran is in his third year as a coach at DRBA. He has been coaching for over 10 years. In the ten years he has coached from 8U baseball up through 14u baseball. He is a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, where he was a pitcher and first basemen for four years. Curran then went on to pitch at Luther College. He then transferred to The University of Dubuque and finished with a degree in business administration and accounting.

Andy Wurster

Hometown: Elizabeth, Illinois
College: Ellsworth Community College
Andy is in his first season as a coach at DRBA. He is a graduate of River Ridge High School (2020) where he was a three-sport athlete, including four years of baseball, and received three regional and one sectional championship. Andy also won four Illinois state titles with the 13u-16u Freeport Stix teams. The former DRBA player is a catcher on the Ellsworth baseball team.

John Thill

Hometown: Dubuque, Iowa
College: The University of Dubuque
John is in his second year as a coach at DRBA. John has volunteered with multiple teams for over a decade. He is a graduate of Hempstead High School (2014) where he played baseball for four years and received the grant vote scholarship. The former Hempstead player attended The University of Dubuque, where he managed the football team for four years and finished with a degree in sports management and marketing with a minor in business.

Luke Kuennen

Hometown: Dubuque Iowa
College: The University of Dubuque
Luke is in his second season as a coach at DRBA. He is a graduate of Senior High School (2020) where he played baseball. Luke primarily played pitcher and catcher. He has been a part of DRBA since it opened. He played under dusty until 2020. Luke is currently a flight operations major at The University of Dubuque.

Jeremy Harper

Jeremy has been a multi-sport athlete his entire life. After graduating from Iowa City’s West High School and Loras College in Dubuque, he became a multi-sport coach. He is a true student of the game of baseball and has coached over 10 youth seasons and counting.

Brian McCleary

Hometown: Muscatine, Iowa
College: Muscatine Community College & Iowa Wesleyan
Brian is in his eighth year as a baseball coach. He is a graduate of Muscatine High School (1991). The former Muscatine High School student played baseball at Muscatine Community College for 2 years. In 1993 Brian's team at Muscatine Community College finished 5th in the nation at the D1 JUCO World series. Brian’s primary position was a pitcher. Brian graduated from Iowa wesleyan college in 1996 with a BA in marketing.

Javier Rivera

Hometown: Bayamón, Puerto Rico
College: Mount Mercy University
Javier is in his First season as a coach at DRBA. He was an assistant coach at Cedar Rapids Washington High School from 2012 to 2016. He is a graduate of Thomas C. Ongay High School (1997) where he was an infielder. The former Thomas C. Ongay player went on to attend Mount Mercy University where he graduated in 2003 with a degree in criminal justice.

Mike Clemens

Hometown: Dubuque, Iowa
College: The University of Dubuque
Mike has coached at DRBA since it opened. Mike has previously coached football and women's track at Hempstead. He also coached the Dubuque Brewers for 10 plus years and The Dubuque County Legion team in 2013 & 2014. He attended Dubuque Senior and Hempstead High School where he was a four-sport athlete including 4 years of baseball and received first team all-conference MVC in football and baseball. The former Independent league hall of famer attended The University of Dubuque where he played both football and baseball.

College: Mt. Mercy University
Brady is in his first season as a coach at DRBA. He is a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School (2020 where he played baseball for four years. The former ram is now a pitcher at Mt. Mercy University in Cedar Rapids Iowa. Brady is majoring in finance.
